From 1975-1996, Lyle excelled in rough-stock events: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. He rode in over 100 rodeos each year and is one of only four men to qualify for the NFR in all three rough-stock events. In 1980, Lyle realized there was more to life than gold buckles and statistics. He said, "Real joy comes from my relationship with Jesus Christ, which eliminated the pressure of competition". He has shared his story many times, most notably during Billy Graham's national telecasts.
